This course combines a two-day live workshop and process validations, along with pre-course reading, and significant online/distance learning (DIL) coursework, followed by two, proctored, written examinations, to train pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in sterile compounding and aseptic technique (SCAT). All course activities are designed to be completed within a two month time-frame; however, motivated students may be able to move through the online coursework and written testing more quickly. The two-day, hands-on workshop is held in our state-of-the-art training facility in Austin, Texas. All other coursework is completed online using our Blackboard Learning Management System. This course requires significant preparatory work to be ready for the rigorous live workshop. The live workshop will be comprised of a brief review of USP standards and basic aseptic technique principles, followed by a series of process validation procedures which include: aseptic garbing and hand washing, hood cleaning, large and small volume parenteral preparation, ampule preparation, etc. This course is designed to train pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in basic sterile compounding and aseptic technique principles based on current USP standards.

NOTE: this course meets the requirements for accredited training defined by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy in TAC 291.133. Prerequisites: Certified (PTCB) pharmacy technician and/or registered pharmacy technician or pharmacy technician trainee; or registered pharmacist or pharmacy intern; or be enrolled in or have completed an ASHP/ACPE-Accredited Pharmacy Technician Program or ACPE Accredited College of Pharmacy or have a minimum of six months of pharmacy experience. The course is designed to confirm understanding of USP797> principles related to sterile compounding and aseptic technique. The course also provides an overview of the procedures and requirements for teaching the SCAT IV Certification course once the instructor’s certification course has been successfully completed.

Q: Do I need to do continuing education in order to maintain this certificate? At this time there is not a continuing education requirement in order to maintain this certificate. However, each state board of pharmacy may have requirements related to IV certification. In addition, regulations regarding sterile compounding and aseptic technique are rapidly evolving. Refer to your state board of pharmacy as well as your facility policy and procedure manual to determine any special requirements for CE specific to sterile compounding personnel. Q: Is this statement of credit transferable from institution to institution, or from state to state? However, for purposes of clarity, it should be noted that the proper terminology is that you have completed a CE activity from an ACPE accredited provider. This IV certification course meets all current standards for IV certification. Q: I am a pharmacist, but the book says it is for “pharmacy technicians” can I still use this book and training program in order to earn the CE that is required for pharmacists? Upon completion of the course, pharmacists will earn 40 hours (4.0 CEUs) of ACPE accredited continuing education with the “P” UAN designator indicating that it is pharmacist-specific CE. This may be comprised of reading, completing homework assignments, watching the DVD demonstrations, studying, and taking the two written exams. Q: I have been working in the IV room for many years, do I really have to complete the 20 hours of hands-on training? In order to complete the course and earn ACPE accredited CE, you are required to complete at least 20 hours of hands-on training. This may be comprised of informal practice and training in various aspects of SCAT, completing the procedural labs at the end of chapters 6 – 14, practicing for the process validation procedures, and the nine process validations that are required as part of the course. The Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists (TSHP) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. The Sterile Compounding for Aseptic Technique (SCAT) training course has been accredited for 40.0 hours (4.0 CEUs) of credit. To receive credit the participant must provide the student registration information form, documentation of training hours form, and CPE evaluation form. Lisa McCartney, BAAS, CPhT, PhTR Department Chair of Pharmacy Technology Austin Community College Austin, Texas Lisa McCartney is the department chair of the ASHP Accredited Pharmacy Technician Program at Austin Community College. In addition, Lisa is the CPE Administrator for the program's ACPE providership. She has been educating pharmacy technicians since 1999. Lisa has over 30 years of pharmacy experience with specific expertise in the area of USP compliance, sterile compounding, and aseptic technique. She became a certified instructor in sterile compounding in 1997. She became PTCB certified in 1995 and has been registered with the State of Texas since 2005.
She received her AAS degree in Pharmacy Technology from Weatherford College, and a BAAS in Occupational Education from Texas State University, and will receive her Master’s degree in Education from TSU in December, 2013. Lisa is a 2011 NISOD award winner for Teaching and Leadership Excellence. In 2012, she received the Roy Kemp award from the Pharmacy Technician Educator's Council, and in 2013, received the Mike Knapp award from TSHP. Lisa has served in various positions with the Pharmacy Technician Educator's Council, the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and the Austin-Area Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

Pharmacy Aseptic Technique Training
This course is designed for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy educators who teach, train, or supervise personnel who prepare compounded sterile preparations (CSPs). The course combines home study, written exam, and videotaped knowledge and skills assessment and process validation. CPE activity completers receive a certificate of course completion and state of ACPE CE credit for 8 hours/0.8 CEUs. Instructors can then return to their practice setting or school and train pharmacy technicians in current USP standards for sterile compounding and aseptic technique. (Students receive certificate of course completion and ACPE statement of credit for 40 hours/4.0 CEUs.) Please note that due to individual state requirements some state boards of pharmacy may require the training and validation to be completed by a pharmacist who has previously completed a sterile products training course. In some states, supervision by a technician may not be sufficient.
