Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W213) Overview Manufacturer Production February 2016–present 2017–present Assembly Germany: China: Wanaherang(Thonburi Automotive Assembly Plant co. Contents. Development and launch The whole development process stretched over 48 months. In that time, Mercedes-Benz produced 1,200 prototypes and drove a combined 12 million kilometres in some of the world's toughest conditions, from sub-zero temperatures in the snow through to the world's hottest deserts.

In testing the car, Mercedes-Benz also had its prototypes conduct over 10,000 autonomous braking procedures and 5,000 automated lane changes as part of the Distronic suite of semi-autonomous driving features. Moreover, it took 1,200 engineers to make the fifth-generation E-Class. After Mercedes-Benz invested close to €1 Billion into the development of the extensive refresh to the 2014 mid-life of, most likely the most expensive mid-life facelift in the history of the automobile, the next generation E-Class was unveiled at the 2016. The 2017 E-Class has a design similar to that of the larger and the smaller. While its predecessor had a tighter surface and harder edges, the 2017 model is curvier and more flowing. An official design sketch was released in late December 2015, which confirmed that the new E-Class mirrors the styling of the C-Class and S-Class. Official photos of the 2017 E-Class were leaked on the internet on 4 January 2016 ahead of its unveiling.

The W213 was first released in the saloon configuration, which went on sale in the summer 2016. The Estate, offering a similar 695-litre luggage capacity to its predecessor, went to sale towards the end of 2016. A two-door Coupe arrived in 2017, before the Convertible completes the line-up towards the end of 2017. Engine options for the 2017 E-Class saw a major update, thanks to the switch to inline-6 engines from the current V6 engines, along a new generation of four-cylinder diesel engines and existing four-cylinder petrol engines. All engines, save for the AMG V8, comes with Mercedes’ 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic gearbox as standard.

AMG V8 uses 9-speed AMG Speedshift. Until april 2018, E 200 was available with a 6-speed manual transmission in Europe, but it was discontinued and 9G-Tronic became standard. Alongside standard rear-wheel drive, selected engines is offered with optional four-wheel drive. Design. Cabriolet (A238) Stylistically, the 2017 E-Class followed the latest C-Class, the, and the. Its front end features Mercedes’ familiar bullet-shaped headlights and an upright grille, while its rear end gets a pair of LED taillights, with similarities to the 2014 E-Class models, that extend into the quarter panels. As on other recent models, the 2017 E-Class features two distinct front-end treatments: a traditional chrome grille and a more sporting blade grille.

The aerodynamic efficiency have been refined as the drag coefficient improved from 0.25 in the previous model to a class-leading 0.23. W212 facelift comparison The W213 adopts Mercedes’ modular MRA platform, as used by the contemporary C-Class and S-Class models.

The W213 E-Class grew 43 mm in length to 4,923 mm (194 in). Wheelbase was also extended 65 mm to 2,939 mm (116 in), resulting in shorter overhangs. It is 2 mm narrower and 6 mm lower than its predecessor. The increased use of high-strength steel and aluminium is claimed to make the car up to 100 kg lighter than the W212 E-Class. The W213 E-Class features the Sensual Purity design philosophy, a design philosophy previously used on the larger W222 S-Class (2013) and the smaller W205 C-Class (2014).

However, the W213 E-Class is seen as an evolution of the facelifted version of W212 (2013), as the two vehicles share several design traits. Comparison between the W 213 E-Class (left) and W 212 mid-cycle refresh with the AMG Sports Package (right) The W213 E-Class' front bumper is reminiscent of the facelifted W212's optional sport kit (dubbed the AMG Sports Package), as it's governed by two air intakes united by a mesh grille.

Compared to the standard front bumper of the W212, which is similar to the one used on the W205 C-Class, the W213 E-Class' proposal is more aggressive, composed and simple. The classic iconic grille, has simpler, flowing lines, with a more imposing presence on W213, while the sport variant (with the big logo in the middle) isn't so different from the W212. The S-Class inspired, sweptback and rather compact headlights are the styling feature of the W213 model. On both cars the doors sit pretty high, squeezing the windows, but the W212 masks this 'trait' with a subtle slope towards the headlights. In fact, on the profile of the facelifted W212, it still retains the edgy lines that came out in 2009. At the back, the W213 adopted a fresh design for the lights similar to the S-Class. However, the tailpipes finishers are similar to the ones found on the W212, with the rear bumper keeping its overall shape.

Interior. The interior with two 12.3-inch full HD screens housed within a single unit. The interior of the 2017 E-Class was unveiled by Mercedes-Benz in December 2015, which was previewed on the Concept IAA (Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile) that Mercedes showed in September 2015 at the. The interior mounts two 12.3-inch full HD screens housed within a single unit. Most E-Class models receives the widescreen set-up as standard. However, base Avantgarde versions features traditional analogue dials with a seven-inch multi-information display, along with an 8.4-inch central infotainment screen. Mercedes-Benz claimed a first for the automotive industry, adding a pair of touch-sensitive control buttons on the steering wheel, which respond to finger swipes to control the car's infotainment system.

The more traditional Command controller is also retained on the centre console. Equipment The W213's technology was previewed at a technical presentation in July 2015. The launch of the 2017 E-Class saw Mercedes move a step closer to autonomous driving, with nine all-new or comprehensively updated driver assistance systems to feature. The car took many of the features seen in the latest S-Class and took them on to a new level.

Autonomous driving A number of sensors, cameras and radars has allowed semi-automated driving. There may be fewer sensors and cameras than before (12 and four respectively over the W212 model), but they all feature increased functionality which reduces cost and complexity.

The next level of Drive Pilot (code-named Intelligent Drive) featured on the 2017 E-Class enables the car to negotiate bends on the motorway, while maintaining a safe distance from slower moving vehicles in front at up to speeds of 130 mph (210 km/h). The system is not a hands free operation and an audible alert will prompt the driver into regaining control if the car detects their attention has wandered. The Steering Pilot function uses visible road markings to navigate bends at speeds of up to 81 mph (130 km/h). The car is able scan the surrounding area as well as the car in front if road markings are unclear to maintain lane discipline.

The system is also able to automatically increase or decrease the E-Class’s speed by reading speed limit signs if the driver fails to take any action. Safety innovations Active Brake Assist and Evasive Steering Assist work in tandem to warn of and prevent potential collisions in the 2017 E-Class. The first system now features increased functionality, able to provide visible warning of potential danger as well as being able to automatically apply the brakes in an emergency.

The system is now also able to detect and analyze moving traffic at junctions ahead. Evasive Steering Assist can detect when a driver is making an evasive action and apply additional steering force to ensure the pedestrian or vehicle is avoided. Car-to-X Communication is another safety system which enables vehicles on the same road to warn each other of upcoming potential hazards or accidents. If an unavoidable side collision is detected, PRE-SAFE Impulse Side rapidly inflates the side bolster to move the occupant away from the point of impact, while at the same time PRE-SAFE Sound pumps noise waves through the speakers to reduce hearing damage following a collision. Mobile connection A brand new remote parking smartphone app, called Remote Parking Pilot, will allow drivers to park their vehicle from outside of the car to allow for easier ingress and egress. The system only works at very low speeds of 2 mph, with the vehicle also able to lock, unlock and start itself from the app. Another new smartphone feature is Digital Car Key, which allows the driver's smartphone to be used as a vehicle key - essentially replacing a conventional key fob.

The system uses which also allows the car to be locked and unlocked even if the phone is out of battery. Adaptive LED Matrix Lighting. Adaptive LED Matrix Lighting Introduced on the for 2014, Mercedes’ headlamps are enhanced for the 2017 E-class. The individual LED count increases from 24 to 84, each individually controllable—switching between high- and low-beams, and the curve-following adaptive-lighting functions are now achieved entirely via electronics.

The light pattern is also altered in city driving or via information from the navigation system (such as when approaching intersections). Additionally, the light unit glows blue. As with the mid-cycle refresh of, the 2017 E-Class features two larger units instead of the four-eyes headlights, though unique LED light bars within the headlamps still gives the night-time effect of four individual units. Prior to its world debut, a teaser video previewing the car's multibeam LED headlamps was released in January 2015. Drift Mode Introduced in the E63 S, drift mode allows the car to completely cut the front axle from it's all wheel drive 4MATIC system and transfer all 604 hp (612 PS; 450 kW) and 627 lb⋅ft (850 N⋅m) of torque to the rear axle of the car.

This allows the driver to engage in easier drifts due to the nature of the rear wheel drive function. To enable drift mode, the driver must select Race mode, turn ESP off, and put the automatic gearbox into manual shifting. Next, the driver must pull both the paddles towards them and an option for drift mode arises. To fully enable drift mode, the driver must pull the right paddle and drift mode is now enabled. Drift mode can be equipped with E-Class AMG models only.

Variants. Estate All-Terrain In a departure from previous generations, the Estate is offered in two distinct variants: a traditional on-road model and an All-Terrain version to directly rival the and. Unveiled at the 2016, the Estate All-Terrain features a 29 mm higher ride height due to the Air Body Control air suspension (15 mm) and 20 in wheels fitted as standard (14 mm). There is also external plastic cladding to protect the body from scratches and scrapes, as well as the 4Matic permanent four-wheel-drive system with 31/69 front-rear torque split. E300 (2016-) An E300, with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, will join the range at launch. This engine was is previously available in the facelift W212 E-class in some markets. This engine produces 184 PS (181 hp; 135 kW) in the E200, 211 PS (208 hp; 155 kW) in the E250 and 245 PS (242 hp; 180 kW) in the E300.

Like the W212 facelift, the W213 E300 produces 245 PS (242 hp; 180 kW) and 370 N⋅m (270 lb⋅ft) and accelerates from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.2 seconds. E400 (2016-) An E400 with a 3.0-litre turbo M276 V6 petrol engine. It is carried over from the W212 facelift E class and it produces 333 PS (328 hp; 245 kW) and 480 N⋅m (350 lb⋅ft) of torque. It accelerates from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.9 seconds, a full second faster than the E300. E400 Wagon (2016-). E400 Wagon An E400 with the same 3.0-litre M276 petrol engine as the sedan version.

This car share many similarities with the E400 sedan but shows differences in its styling and engine. Unlike the E400 sedan's single turbo engine, the E400 wagon is equipped with a twin turbo V6 producing 329 hp (245 kW; 334 PS) and 354 lb⋅ft (480 N⋅m) of. The main difference seen in this particular model is the fact that it has an increased cargo area.

The E400 wagon has a maximum space of 64.3 cubic feet of load space compared to with 57.4 in the sedan version. The E400 wagon can also be equipped through options with third row seating allowing more passengers to ride in the car. It can sprint from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 5.1 seconds and do the quarter mile in 13.7 seconds at 102 mph (164 km/h) due to its system. E350e Plug-in Hybrid (2016-). E350e Plug-in Hybrid The E350e is a, equipped with a 208 hp (211 PS; 155 kW) turbocharged inline-four coupled with an 87 hp (65 kW; 88 PS) electric motor between the engine. The E350e's transmission is a nine-speed automatic gearbox. Mercedes claims that the car has a 21 mi (34 km) electric only range.

The hybrid plug to charge the car is connected on rear bumper through a small door similar to how the gas door is setup. The E350e can sprint from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 6.2 seconds. Mercedes claims the E350e weighs about 4,250 lb (1,930 kg), compared to the E300's weight of 3,650 lb (1,660 kg). The way to distinguish an E350e from a non-hybrid E300 is the badging.

An E350e badge is placed on the rear trunk as well as a blue 'Plug-in Hybrid' on the side of the car. Mercedes offers an option to paint the brake calipers the same blue as the 'Plug-in Hybrid' as well. Mercedes-Benz AMG E 43 Premium+ (UK) The all-wheel-drive only Mercedes-AMG E43 joined the range in September 2016, powered by a 401 PS (295 kW; 396 bhp) twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6, producing 521 N⋅m (384 lb⋅ft) of torque, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. It will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.6 seconds and run on to an electronically limited 250 km/h (155 mph).

The AMG E43 is the first of the new AMG 43 series with a higher output of 401 PS vs 367 PS of the existing AMG 43 series. Presented in November 2016, the new Mercedes-AMG E63 gets AMG’s twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 in two states of tune and with all-wheel-drive only. The standard AMG E63 4Matic has 571 PS (420 kW; 563 bhp) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.5 seconds. The AMG E63 S 4Matic has 612 PS (450 kW; 604 bhp) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.4 seconds. Both versions are electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph), however this can be increased to 300 km/h (190 mph) with the AMG Driver's Package. AMG E63 Wagon (2016-) Just like the E63 sedan the E63 wagon is also and is also equipped with the 4.0 litre V8 in 2 states of tune.

The AMG E63 wagon's styling queues and features are much different from the base model to distinguish that it is a performance variant of the car. The front bumper is wider, a front splitter is added, and large opening flanks are seen on the AMG-branded grille. The car also has various AMG branding throughout the it to show its significance and the badging on the rear trunk lid depicts that it is in fact an AMG E63 wagon. The main difference seen on the exterior as well as the interior of the car is the fact that it is a wagon that has a hatchback trunk opening. The AMG E63 wagon is equipped with 64 cubic feet of cargo volume compared to the AMG E63 sedan's 57.4 cubic feet.

A few months ago, Mercedes revealed a A-class sedan for the Chinese market, but now it’ll be coming to Europe, too. The new car will be built in Mexico and Germany, and should enter the market in the latter half of this year. Mercedes says the A-class sedan will be offered with A180d and A200 engines first, with both coming with a 7-speed DCT auto ‘box. As you’d expect, the new car will feature the same innovative interior as hatchback we’ve already driven.

2018 Mercedes Benz E Class E300

Interestingly, Mercedes says the new A-class sedan features the lowest drag figure of all production vehicles worldwide at just Cd 0.22. It beats the hatchback’s 0.25 figure thanks to a more streamlined rear end. UK prices are yet to be released, but we’ll update this article when we know more. To our eyes, the new A-Class sedan looks well-proportioned, and a lot like the BMW 2-series. With any luck we’ll see an M2-equivalent in time. The A-Class sedan in numbers.

Effective legroom front/rear: 1062/861 mm New Mercedes A-class: everything you need to know The new Mercedes A-class is here, and it’s a significant step over the outgoing car. Featuring all-new styling on the outside, the new Mercedes’ interior sees the biggest changes: it’s more like its larger E-class sibling than anything else. But is it a winner in the increasingly-competitive hatchback market? And read on for everything else you need to know about the car, with all our news, tech specs, first pictures and more analysis from the car's launch.

New Mercedes A-class: design Everything has changed; the 2018 A-class has a new face, great new interior and fresh petrol and diesel engines. It still has that familiar A-class face, albeit one that’s been smoothed out to get rid of those pesky creases of the old one, and manages to look a lot like a shrunken version of the new. New Mercedes A-class: specs and price Prices for the all-new hatchback were announced at the - and it'll cost from £25,800 in the UK. The order books opened during the show and you can now place your order at dealers from March 2018 onwards. That entry price will bag you an entry-level A180d SE, while the cheapest petrol costs from £27,500. UK orders opened in March 2018 for A180 and A200 petrol models.

Prices have been confirmed:. Mercedes A180d SE From £25,800. Mercedes A200 From £27,500. Mercedes A250 From £30,240 Spec choices are SE, Sport or AMG Line. Standard UK A-class equipment includes a touchscreen with the new MBUX infotainment syste, voice control, comfort suspension, 16-inch alloys (bigger rims on higher specs), DAB radio, keyless go, air-con, active lane keep assist and Artico faux leather upholstery.

More engines, trims and configurations will join the range later in 2018. Prices will drop below £25,000 once the cheaper manual gearbox versions arrive (every model at launch comes with a seven-speed auto only). New Mercedes A-class: engines, 0-62mph and performance The engine range is all-new, launching with a brand-new 1.4-litre turbo petrol and a heavily revised 1.5-litre diesel. First off is the A200, which uses a 161bhp 1.4-litre turbo petrol co-developed with the Renault-Nissan alliance under the M282 codename. You can have it with seven-speed dual-clutch ‘box or a six-speed manual that arrives later in the year, and is capable of an 8.0sec 0-62mph launch when fitted with the former. The punchier A250 petrol is a DCT-only model with a 221bhp 2.0-litre petrol, while the only diesel option for now is the A180d (also DCT-only) with a 114bhp 1.5-litre oil -burner capable of 68.8mpg.

Check out the full engine specs below: A200 Engine 1.4-litre turbo petrol, 161bhp, 184lb ft Performance 8.0sec 0-62mph (DCT), 8.2sec (manual), 140mph top speed Economy 55.3mpg (DCT), 50.4mpg (manual), 120g/km CO2 (DCT), 133g/km (manual) A250 Engine 2.0-litre turbo petrol, 221bhp, 258lb ft Performance 6.2sec 0-62mph, 155mph Economy 47mpg, 141g/km CO2 A180d Engine 1.5-litre turbodiesel, 114bhp, 192lb ft Performance 10.5sec 0-62mph, 125mph Economy 68.8mpg, 180g/km CO2 Fancy something hotter? You’ll have to wait for now, but two AMG-fettled A-class versions are coming – an A35 and an A45. We revealed earlier in 2018 that the A35 would have around 300bhp – enough to worry a Golf R – and use Mercedes’ new EQ boost mild hybrid tech first seen in the new CLS and E-class 53 models. The all-guns-blazing A45 mega hatch is expected to produce more than 400bhp and tipped for a 2019 launch.

New Mercedes A-class: interior The inside of the entry-level Benz resembles that of an S-class more than ever, with additional tech, greater space and a far more premium feel. Mercedes is making bold claims about the tech on board, and it’s the car’s biggest, most appealing feature to mark it out against its rivals. The cabin in top-spec models is dominated by two large 10.25-inch screens that sit in line with the divide between the dashboard’s two horizontal sections. Gone is the rotary knob controlling the central infotainment display, instead replaced by a large touchpad and leather pad for the operator’s wrist. Even the steering wheel has been lifted from an S-class, featuring the same design and button arrangement of Merc’s most expensive limousine.

Mercedes isn’t wrong about the levels of luxury on offer – for a car that will be the cheapest in the manufacturer’s range the 2018 A-class feels every inch the premium hatch when we jumped behind the wheel at the car’s official unveiling. There’s a nice variety of plush materials, and a genuine wow factor when you get inside. The materials, technology and attention to detail were all up to the standards you’d expect from a premium saloon. Wood, brushed metals and soft-touch plastics fill the cabin, as does the ambient lighting available in a veritable rainbow of 64 different colour shades. Shrinking violets need not apply. Previously controlled by dated rotary switches, the climate control now operates via horizontal rocker switches with changes in temperature reflected on the central infotainment screen. A choice of seats is available, with top-level cars benefitting from heated and cool massaging chairs.

An increased wheelbase of 30mm means more room inside, too, which is even better news for young families. It’s still a low car to get in and out of, but the larger rear doors make a big difference, and we didn’t struggle for space behind an average-height adult on first inspection. The boot is noticeably bigger too, and access is much easier thanks to a wider tailgate and lower sill. New Mercedes A-class: MBUX The new infotainment system in the A-class is called MBUX, and seems to be heavily focused on touch-sensitive operation.

The A-class will therefore have a touchscreen, a touchpad on the centre console, and there’ll also be touch-control buttons on the steering wheel, too. According to Mercedes, this should help with less driver distraction. The huge free-standing infotainment screen is used to great effect, with incredibly crisp graphics and a very user-friendly interface. The choice of methods of swiping and scrolling helps here, as does the high-res screen and sharp graphics. The instrument cluster, on the other hand, will be used to show Assistance, Journey or Navigation information. In order to minimise distraction, the new A-class will also feature a more intelligent voice control system, which Mercedes says will be capable of accepting more conversational requests. All you need to do is say ‘Hey Mercedes’ and it’ll talk back to you like Alexa in your home.

On first try, it’s an intuitive system that also learns your habits and comes up with suggestions for your journey. Mercedes says it’ll update its Mercedes ME app ecosystem, and add more scope for personalisation in the new A-class interior. New machine learning abilities also mean the new A-class will predictively suggest activities or tasks depending on what time of the day or week it is. For example, if you usually go to the gym after work, the A-class’s sat-nav will automatically suggest it as a destination when you finish work. New Mercedes A-class: trims, specs and variants Mercedes says there are four trim levels available for the new A-class, but they may or may not all make it across to the UK market. For now, the trims we know are standard include SE, Sport and AMG Line. The car’s available to order from March, when full prices and specs will be revealed.

All A-class models have automatic air-con, MBUX infotainment system with two separate seven-inch screens, automatic headlights and wipers, keyless go and Merc’s Dynamic Select drive mode system. Both SE and Sport models have their own design tweaks and feature comfort seats instead of sports ones, but AMG Line will be the biggest seller over here, seen here in white in our picture gallery above. For the first year after the launch, an Edition 1 trim is also available that dolls up your new A with yellow detailing and not a lot else. AMG Line cars get their own specific body kit, 18-inch AMG alloys, lowered suspension and sportier detailing inside.

An optional Night Package throws in a load of fresh black bits, as well as the usual choice of Premium and Premium Plus packages to boost the kit count significantly. New Mercedes A-class: anything else? There's also a saloon version, but it's not coming to the UK. The car you see below is bespoke to the Chinese market, but Mercedes says that an A saloon 'tailored to the needs of customers outside of China will likewise launch in the second half of the year (2018).' The new A saloon is also built exclusively in China at Beijing Benz Automotive Co, in partnership with BAIC Motors. Does the design look a bit familiar? We first saw a glimpse of how it would look from the, first revealed at the Shanghai motor show in 2017.

Chinese-market engines will include a 1.33-litre 4cyl petrol with either 134bhp or 161bhp from launch, with a 2.0-litre 4cyl engine coming later. Inside, it’s like the regular A-Class hatch, with a slick interior complete with Merc’s MBUX infotainment system and navigation that features augmented reality overlays. For all the info on the regular A-Class below. Now we’ve driven the new Mercedes A-class.
