Does anyone know anything about a 1995 Chevy diesel? My brother is looking for an economical replacement for his Jeep Liberty to tow a 5,000lb camper. It's too much weight to tow comfortably with the Liberty. He would love a 2006 F350, but can't justify spending 40k to use it 10 times a year for camping they are getting scarce right now anyways. They want 10k for the Chevy. It has 50k miles and is in showroom condition.

He was told it was a descent motor, just underpowered by today's standards. Caustic scrubber design guide. It's a dually 4X4 auto trans Crew cab with all the options available that year. My guess is it would be a giant step up for towing and 5k is a feather for a 3500 truck.

My neighbor has the exact same year and model truck. The only problems he has had is the vacuum pump has siezed up a couple times and burnt the drive belt off it. Other than that not any problems with it, and he hauls a diesel bobcat around with it. He also drives it back and forth to North Carolina from Mass several times a year and he swears that the truck gets 22mpg on the entire round trip. The truck also has well over 100k on it.

I HAD a 1995 K2005 Extended cab with a 5 speed heavy duty manual with the 6.5. Worse vehicle I ever had.

It left me on the side of the road like clockwork every six months for the last two years I owned it. June/July and then in November/December. I had the engine failure because of the computer. The tranny went a couple of times.

The hydraulic clutch also left me on the side of the road twice. Make a turn off a road going slightly downhill and then going up hill killed the hydraulic clutch twice.

It had a 4.10 rear end on it. I might have gotten 19 mpg every once in awhile. Usually in the 17/18s. I NEVER towed with it but I did carry stuff. Given that the truck in question is an auto not the manual maybe he will have better luck.

Well the computer will go. I heard on Car Talk one day that a mechanic at Fort Stewart in GA would have to pour water on top of the engine to get it to work when it would fail. Never did try that trick. The Chevy was traded for an F350. I had tried to buy a Ford in 1995 but there was a strike and no Ford trucks could be had with a diesel.

I pulled a fairly heavy 28 foot travel trailer, loaded, with a CB750 in the back of the pick-up across the US 3 times with a 6.2 GMC - the only problems I ever had was a blown 700R4 and a vacuum pump.

130 HP but a long lasting and fuel efficient engine. Mine is an early 94 and the pump went 170k miles. The black box on the side of the pump is a problem area. It needs to be remote mounted to the intake on a cooler so that it can be changed easily. They last anywhere from 50k to 100k and run around $250. It pays to have a spare in the glove box as it will quit without warning or a check engine light. The computer itself rarely ever goes bad.

The later ones had a different water pump and 2 thermostat housing that helps in the cooling department. The kit to upgrade can be bought at SSdiesel Supply or Kennedy Diesel.

With a 5000 lb trailer they will work well, much more in hilly country can be a chore for it. Mine's a 1/2 ton and with some mods it tows my 6000 lb 5th wheel fine at higher elevation better than any 1/2 ton I've seen.

Of course no other 1/2 ton is a turbo diesel and once Ford offers their new small V8 diesel in the F150, I'll be upstaged. It's not hard to get good milage with 130 hp. / QUOTE The N/A 6.5's are 160HP and the turbo'd engines in 92 were 200HP 93-98(and early 99's) were 190HP and late 99 and up were 205HP. These were the F engine ratings, the S(light duty, mostly 1500's) engines were mostly 180HP.

The OLD 6.2's were 135HP N/A. They're really a decent engine if you know it's limitations, I'm satisfied with mine. Try for some real world info on them from people that drive them daily. I had a 94 1500 6.5 TD Ext. Cab Long Bed and for it's day it was not underpowered, for a Diesel.

Put 380,000 on the tranny and only flushed the fluid one time. Truck Ate Ball Joints and Brakes for lunch! The actual motor was reliable but the Injector pump was poorly designed and Mfg. Had 12 put on under waqrranty and none of them worked for over 500 miles. Finally spent my own money (at the same dealership)to have it fixed and never had another problem. GM would not pay for it, that is why I now drive Fords!! If you get one that has alrady been fixed it should give you good service.

If not be ready to pay about $2,000.00 to get it fixed right!!
